SUPERB RARE WHITE ANTIQUE LAVA CAMEO, ARIADNE
10K Gold Brooch

Lava cameos became popular in the late 1800s after the discovery of the ruins of
Pompeii and carvers began to work with the lava rock found at the site. White is
the rarest of the lava colors, which include the more commonly seen black and
green. This is an uncommon left facing presentation of Ariadne, wife of
Dionysus, god of wine. Complex hair with loads of symbolic grape
leaves and grapes. Beautiful, serene face and layered gown.
Slight fissure between 1 and 2 o-clock, not uncommon for
a piece of this age. Great dimension to the piece. Touchable
beauty.  Bezel set in gold mount with slightly extended outer lip
and twisted rope accent. Tested 10K.
Back braces were meant to keep lavastone in place.
